Now, with the official trailer (which you can watch in the video above, at the top of this article) and the poster that we show you at the end of the article, the irons in the fire increase even more…
The film in which the Hollywood star debuts in his first horror role has indeed a hype incredible, thanks to the fact that we are talking about a real-life character.

The Pope’s Exorcist is the first fiction film that tells the story of Father Gabriele Amorth, after a documentary that reconstructed his life and above all his work as an exorcist.
The film is directed by Julius Avery, already behind the camera for the appreciated Overlords of 2018. Avery took over from Ángel Gómez.
The screenplay was co-written by Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos (the latter is the director of The sacred evil), who were inspired by the real ones memoir by the Vatican’s chief exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth An Exorcist Tells His Story And An Exorcist: More Stories. Some script revisions are by Chuck MacLean. The initial story is edited by Michael Petroni, Chester Hastings and R. Dean McCreary.
Doug Belgrad of 2.0 Entertainment is producing the film along with Michael Patrick Kaczmarek, Jeff Katz of Worldwide Katz and Eddie Siebert of Loyola Productions President. Overseeing the project are Scott Strauss, Michael Bitar and Giselle Johnson of Screen Gems.

Sony Pictures is betting a lot on its new horror film with a religious background, a film that will undoubtedly increase public tension on one of the most popular themes in genre cinema: exorcism.
Considering the subject matter, there will clearly be supernatural veins.
The Pope’s Exorcist tells the story of Father Amorth who investigates the possession of a boy and who will eventually uncover a centuries-old conspiracy that the Vatican tries to keep hidden.
You can watch the official trailer of the film The Pope’s Exorcist (The Pope’s exorcist is the title of the Italian version) in the video that you find at the top of this article. At the bottom instead we show you the poster.

An unusual role for Russell Crowe

This role is quite unusual for the Hollywood star, who had never approached the horror genre before.
The American star will then be on the set in the cloth of Father Gabriele Amorth, who died in 2016 and already starred in the docufilm The Devil and Father Amorth by William Friedkin (director of the 1973 cult movie The exorcist). Friedkin’s documentary was presented within the Venice Film Festival, in the 2017 edition.

The cast of the film

Russell Crowe in the starring role of Father Amorth is joined by Alex Essoe (Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass) and Daniel Zovatto (It Follows, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, Man in the Dark). To interpret the Pope is instead the legendary Italian actor Franco Nero (Django Unchained, John Wick – Chapter 2).

Despite the remarkable cast, the “prima donna” is absolutely Russell Crowe. In the role of the presbyter known for his exorcisms he appears very involved. This can be seen from his performance as a chapeau, of which we can already get some small glimpses in the teaser and trailer that have just been released.

Who was Father Amorth

Father Amorth, a priest specializing in exorcism who died in 2016 at the age of ninety-one, is known for his work on behalf of the Vatican which has led him, over the years, to perform over one hundred thousand exorcisms, an activity documented in several books. The rights of memoir of Amorth – mainly, An Exorcist Tells His Story And An Exorcist: More Storiesin Italy published with the titles An exorcist tells And New tales of an exorcist – were acquired by Screen Gems and the story and screenplay of the film are based on them The Pope’s Exorcist.
