The Stone was taken from Scotland in 1296 by King Edward I of England. It has been ever since used for the coronation of English monarchs and then by the British ones when James VI of Scotland ascended the throne of London following the death of Queen Elizabeth I, unifying the two monarchies

Until the 1950 the Stone remained continuously in London. That year three students from the University of Glasgow la they stole from Westminster Abbey. She was found the following year in Arbroath Abbey, Scotland, where the birth of the Scottish nation was proclaimed in 1320
