Taika Waititi has declared that he will not be involved in the possible fifth chapter of the film series dedicated to Thor, which seems to be in development at Marvel according to some rumors that have been circulating online for about a month. “I don’t know if it will happen. But I know that I won’t be involved”, said the New Zealand director to the microphones of BusinessInsider.
Waititi directed Thor: Ragnarok And Thor: Love and Thunder. He not only directed the latter but he also co-wrote it. From his recent words, it is likely that of Thor: Love and Thunder was the last time that the New Zealand filmmaker took part in this Marvel franchise, at least according to his latest statements recently entrusted to BusinessInsider.
For about a month, persistent rumors have been circulating online that Marvel Studios is developing a fifth Thor film. The same rumors say that Waititi, director of the last two chapters of the successful series, is not part of it.
Waititi: “I know I won’t be involved in an eventual one Thor 5“
BusinessInsider interviewed the director on Monday 13 November on the occasion of the promotion of Waititi’s new film, entitled Next Goal Wins and out tomorrow, Friday 17th (to challenge bad luck, even if overseas it’s not the 17th who is unlucky but our lucky 13th). During the chat with the director, BusinessInsider he asked him directly for clarification on the possibility of his presence or not in a possible Thor 5.
“I don’t know if the news of an upcoming fifth film by Thor whether accurate or not,” Waititi said a BI. “I know I won’t be involved,” she added bluntly, to dispel any doubts.
“I’m going to focus on these other films that I’ve signed deals for,” he said.
Waititi is working on the film adaptation of the novel The Incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky
The writer-director noted that he is currently working on the film adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s graphic novel titled The Incal. He is also continuing development on his highly anticipated film Star Wars.
“It’s still maturing. I’m writing,” he says of the project Star Wars.
Waititi predicts his next film will be Klara and the Sun
Before carrying out the projects of The Incal and of Star WarsTaika Waititi says he predicts his next film will be Klara and the Sunbased on the best-selling novels by Kazuo Ishiguro.
The story follows Klara, a robot designed to prevent loneliness among teenagers. She will try to save a group of humans with whom she lives, destroyed by the breakup of romantic relationships.
“So it’s been six, seven years,” Waititi says. “I guess another one Thor it would be much earlier than this.”
The director has nothing against Marvel, on the contrary, he specifies that he loves it and that there is absolutely good blood between him and the film studio: “I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris,” he adds, referring to Chris Hemsworth, star of Thor.
A director who literally saved the Thor franchise
Let’s face it: Taika Waititi was the one who saved the franchise Thor from a possible fall in style and a probable collapse in terms of success (and box office). When the New Zealand filmmaker agreed to make Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, it was the moment when the film series literally saved itself. And in fact its quirky humor, combined with a truly gripping plot, helped make it Thor: Ragnarok the most profitable chapter of the entire epic of Thorgrossing over $855 million worldwide.
Then it was the turn of Thor: Love and Thunder, released in 2022, which however failed to repeat the resounding success of the previous one, although the return of Natalie Portman in the role of Jane Foster and the casting of Christian Bale as the villain Gorr gave the production hope. The film grossed over $760 million worldwide, which isn’t bad anyway.
Waititi says he will have no hard feelings towards Marvel if the studio decides to make another movie about Thor without him. “I would never think that they were cheating on me,” the Oscar winner says, laughing. “We’re in an open relationship, and if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. One day I’ll get back into bed with them again,” jokes the always delightful Taika Waititi.
