Tom Holland, the confession: “I was a slave to alcohol”

The actor: ‘Giving up drinking is the best thing I’ve ever done’

Tom Holland reveals staying sober is “the best thing I’ve ever done”, after realizing he’s become a “slave” to alcohol. Speaking on the ‘On Purpose’ podcast with Jay Shetty, the Spiderman and Avengers star said his journey to sobriety began with “one very, very boozy Christmas” last year.

After deciding to live a non-alcoholic January, “all I could think about – he said – was to drink something. It really scared me”. The awareness prompted him to extend his no-drinking resolution for another month, but he found it hard to resist English culture with the glass ‘at its core’. “I felt like I couldn’t be social,” Holland said. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out to dinner. I was really, really struggling.”

Shaken, he made a goal of going six months without drinking and felt he had moved on when he celebrated his 27th birthday on June 1. It was the “happiest birthday I have ever had in my life.”

The star went on to list some of the benefits she’d experienced since quitting drinking. “Sleeping better. Handling problems better. Much better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter. I’m happy to say: I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not hiding”

The actor added that getting sober has had some knock-on effects. How to give him the strength to stop drinking himself. Holland is currently on a nine-month break from acting after a grueling filming for the Apple TV series ‘The Crowded Room’, based on the book of the same name dedicated to the story of the infamous ‘campus rapist’ Billy Milligan, an American man who claimed to have 24 alternate personalities. A remarkable interpretative effort. In addition, Holland is also an executive producer of the series and therefore “dealing with the day-to-day problems that arise with any film set, just added an extra layer of pressure”.

“Now I’m taking a year off, and that’s a result of how difficult this series has been.” Though the past year has seen him grapple with tough issues, the actor has been supported by his girlfriend and Spider-Man co-star Zendaya. Speaking on the Smartless podcast last week, he said he’s “lucky to have someone like Zendaya in my life.” “It’s interesting to be in a romantic relationship with someone who’s in the same boat as you. You get to share your experiences and a whole range of things. And that’s worth her weight in gold.”
