Trentino Alto Adige elections, the results of the provincial elections in Bolzano and Trento

On 22 October, the voters of the two autonomous provinces went to the polls for the renewal of the provincial councils (and in Trentino also of the president). The results of the two consultations added together will lead to the formation of the regional council. Turnout was down. In Bolzano Kompatscher and his SVP lose votes but remain in the lead, Fdi does well. The League collapses, two anti-vax forces enter: the formation of the new council will be a puzzle. In Trento the votes began this morning

On Sunday 22 October, the voters of the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano went to the polls for the renewal of the provincial councils (and in Trentino also of the president). The results of the two consultations added together will lead to the formation of the regional council of Trentino Alto Adige. Turnout was down in both provinces. In Alto Adige it stood at 71.5% when the polls closed. In 2018, 73.9% of South Tyroleans went to the polls. In Trentino, turnout fell from 64.05 to 58.39% compared to 2018.

How the elections went in South Tyrol

The South Tyrolean governor Arno Kompatscher and his SVP lose support but still remain in the lead. The formation of the new council will be very difficult. According to the definitive data, the Volkspartei drops to 34.5% (-7.4%) and to 13 councilors (15). The second and third forces in the provincial council are Team K (11.1%) and Süd-Tiroler Freiheit (10.9%), both with 4 councillors. At the foot of the podium are the Greens (9%, 3 councillors), while Fdi flies and becomes the leading Italian-speaking force with 6% of the vote and 2 councillors. In 2018 it stopped at 1.7%. The SVP’s coalition partner, the League, drops to 3% and will only have one representative left. Five years ago there were 4 with 11.1%. The list of the former Schützen commander, Jürgen Wirth Anderlan, enters the provincial council and wins two seats (5.9%) with anti-vax and anti-migrant slogans. Two councilors will also field the Freiheitlichen (4.9% against 6.2% five years ago). The Democratic Party is stable with one councilor and 3.5% of the votes (-0.3%). The list of the former SVP councilor Thomas Widmann stops at a single councilor (3.4%), as does La Civica (2.6%) and the anti-vax Vita list which enters the council with the lawyer. Renate Holzeisen (2.6%). Below 1% and far from entering the council are the M5s (0.7%) and Forza Italia (0.6%).

What will happen?

As regards the personal result, the outgoing president loses almost 9,400 votes compared to 2018, but still confirms himself as number one in the preferences with 57,776. SVP secretary Philipp Achammer halved his votes, stopping at 16,563 preferences (-16,259). Surprisingly, the new entry Hubert Messner, retired head physician and brother of the King of the Eight Thousand Reinhold, occupies second position on the SVP list with 30,422 preferences. The issue of the new council is difficult to unravel, because SVP, FDI and Lega together limit themselves to 16 councillors, to reach the indispensable 18, the Freiheitlichen would be needed. An alternative could be the Greens and Team K who have 20 councillors. The so-called Jamaica coalition (for the colors of the parties), however, does not convince the conservative and pragmatic soul of the Volkspartei.

The elections in Trentino

In the province of Trento, however, the polls closed last night at 10pm and the counting of votes began this morning at 7am. In Trentino, voters could also indicate their preference for the governor. There were 441,510 eligible voters. There are 7 candidates for the office of president of the Province, while there are a total of 784 candidates for the provincial council, divided into 24 lists.
