X owner Elon Musk has spoken out again about the idea that the social network he owns may no longer be free. In a livestream conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, the celebrity entrepreneur said the company is “considering a small monthly payment” for using the problem of bots on the platform. Musk didn’t say how much the new subscription would cost, but described it as a “small amount of money.” This was reported by the industry website “TechCrunch”.
The X Premium service
Musk, however, did not go into too much detail. In fact, it has not yet been explained when the payment can actually be introduced. But since the entrepreneur took over the platform last year, the company has already pushed its users to subscribe to X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue). It is a subscription service starting from 8 dollars a month or 84 dollars a year to have access to a variety of features, including the ability to edit posts, to see half of the total ads or even the ability to write longer posts. Currently, X has not provided certified data but, according to an analysis, only 827,615 users subscribe to X Premium. During his speech, Musk also shared new data relating to X, underlining that the social network currently boasts 550 million monthly users, who generate 100 to 200 million posts every day. However, it was not specified whether automated accounts, i.e. bots such as news feeds or spammers, were also considered in the total calculation.
