Uganda, at 70 years old becomes the mother of twins thanks to in vitro fertilization

A birth defined as “a miracle”. This is what a 70-year-old Ugandan woman was the protagonist of who gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. Safina Namukwaya, reports a BBC article, gave birth in a health facility in the capital Kampala, where she had undergone fertility treatments. “This is an extraordinary achievement, twins for Africa’s oldest mother,” commented Dr. Edward Tamale Sali, who assisted the woman throughout her pregnancy and then her birth.

“The Miracle of the Twins”

Sali, a fertility specialist at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Center (WHI&FC), explained that the woman used a donated egg and her partner’s sperm for the in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure. Both newborns, she added, are in good health. “I can’t express my joy right now,” said Namukwaya, who lives in rural Masaka, about 120 kilometers west of Kampala. “At 70 years old, she is considered incapable of getting pregnant and giving birth, or caring for a child, here is the miracle of twins,” she said after the happy event. Just three years ago, the 70-year-old managed to give birth to a daughter, after having long been described as a “cursed woman” as a nulliparous woman. “This story is not only a medical success, but demonstrates the strength and resilience of the human spirit,” said specialists from the facility that treated the woman. The hospital assured that this is an unprecedented achievement in Africa due to the advanced age of her mother. Namukwaya admitted in statements to the NTV network that she suffered some complications during her pregnancy and she admitted that she does not know how she will be able to raise her children, among other reasons why her father abandoned them. “Men don’t like to know that you will have more than one child. Even after I was hospitalized, my man never showed up,” she said.
