“The nuclear confrontation is just a few steps away”. This was stated by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, quoted by Tass, after the Ukrainian media re-launched the news – arrived from London – of a possible supply by Great Britain to Kiev of weapons containing depleted uranium. Moscow’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, also expressed his views on the subject, underlining how “it could end really badly for London if this delivery goes well”. In the evening, the British Ministry of Defense confirmed that the shipment of ammunition is on the agenda, specifying however that “it has nothing to do with nuclear weapons or capabilities” but rather with a “standard” material used by the British army from decades: “Russia knows, but is deliberately trying to misinform.”
London would be ready to send munitions with depleted uranium
Before the Ukrainian media relaunched the news, on Monday what was said in the House of Lords, the non-elective upper house of English democracy, by Baroness Annabel Goldie, deputy defense minister in Rishi Sunak’s Tory government, was ignored, revealing how London is ready to also supply high-yield armor-piercing anti-tank ammunition containing depleted uranium to Kiev. The statement came amid a more nuanced response Goldie gave to a question from 90-year-old Lord Hylton, a veteran of the Assembly and a longtime peacemaker. “Along with a squadron of Challenger 2 heavy combat tanks, we will also be sending the relevant ammunition: including armor-piercing shells that contain depleted uranium,” Goldie said. When Lord Hylton asked for further clarification, the Baroness cut short, arguing that “these shells are highly effective for neutralizing modern tanks and armored vehicles”.
The answer
Today the answer from Moscow, through the mouths of both Defense Minister Shoigu and Foreign Minister Lavrov. “I haven’t heard of these deliveries, but I wouldn’t be surprised by anything, because they have completely lost their sense of direction regarding their actions and how they undermine strategic stability around the world,” Lavrov said. According to Shoigu, after the British declarations, the nuclear confrontation is “just a few steps away”.
