Ukraine, surgery to extract an unexploded grenade from a soldier’s chest

An unexploded grenade has been removed from the chest of a Ukrainian soldier in a first-of-its-kind surgery destined to enter the medical books. The deputy defense minister of Ukraine, Hanna Maliar, told of the medical operation. “Military medics conducted an operation to remove a VOG grenade, which did not rupture, from the soldier’s body,” she wrote in a Facebook post. The deputy minister posted an image of an x-ray in which the bomb is seen inside the soldier’s body and a photo of a surgeon who observes the grenade after surgery (UKRAINE-RUSSIA WAR, FOLLOW THE UPDATES IN TIME REAL).

“One of a kind operation”

The operation, according to a senior Kiev official “one of a kind”, was performed without using electrocoagulation (a method of controlling bleeding during surgery) because “the grenade could explode at any moment”, he stressed Maliar adding that two sappers were present during the operation to ensure it was conducted safely. A team of engineers later neutralized the bomb, said the ministerial adviser for internal affairs of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko, calling the intervention one of those “that will enter the medical textbooks”.
