Unemployment in Italy down, 7.8% in April 2023 according to Istat data


Employment grows thanks to women: in April, against a general increase of 48 thousand units on March, there was a drop of four thousand units among men and an increase of 52 thousand units for women

In April, the employed grew by 48 thousand units compared to March, up 0.2%, and by 390 thousand units compared to last year, with an increase of 1.7%. Good news also from the unemployment rate which drops to 7.8%. Employment is growing thanks to women: in April, against a general increase of 48,000 units over March, there was a drop of 4,000 units among men and an increase of 52,000 units for women. These are the data published by Istat on the employment situation in Italy.

Employment data

According to Istat reports, the employment rate rises to 61%. Employment is growing among permanent employees and the self-employed while it decreases for temporary employees, bringing the employed to 23 million 446 thousand units. On a monthly basis, the employment rate rises to 61%, while the unemployment and inactivity rates drop to 7.8% and 33.6%, respectively. Comparing the February 2023-April 2023 quarter with the previous one, i.e. November 2022-January 2023, there is an increase in the number of employed people of 0.5%, equal to more than 123 thousand units.

Unemployment at 7.8%

The unemployment rate fell to 7.8%, with a reduction of 0.1 points compared to March and 0.4 points compared to April 2022. This is the lowest figure since June 2009, excluding the March-April 2020 period when in the midst of the pandemic, the number of people looking for work collapsed. Job seekers fell below the two million mark to 1,986,000 million, down by 14,000 on March and 72,000 on April 2022. In the month, the employment rate rose to 61%, while the inactivity rate dropped to 33%. .6%, minus 0.1 points on the month and minus 0.9 on the year. The decline in the number of inactive people – between 15 and 64 years old – is the synthesis of the decrease among women and those aged 50 or over and the increase among men and 15-49 year olds. The unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group fell to 20.4%, with a reduction of 1.4 points on March and 4.4 percentage points on April 2022. Compared to April 2022, both the number of looking for work, minus 3.5% equal to -72 thousand units, reaching 1 million 986 thousand people, and the number of inactive people between 15 and 64 years old, minus 3% equal to -383 thousand.

Short-term employment decreases

The institute reports an increase in permanent employee employment while a decrease in fixed-term employment. Permanent employees increased by 74,000 on the month and 468,000 on the year while employees on temporary contracts decreased by 30,000 on March and 149,000 on the year. Independents grew by 5,000 units per month and by 71,000 per year.

Women drive employment growth

The driving force behind employment is given by the growth in the numbers of employed women. Against a general increase of 48,000 units over March, there was a drop of four thousand units among men and an increase of 52,000 units for women. Even on an annual basis, women recorded the best result with 217,000 more employed against an increase of 173,000 among men. The female employment rate reached 52.3% in April with an increase of 0.3 points over March and a growth of 1.4 points over April 2022. Plus 0.6 points over the year for men.
