US Open, Jannik Sinner eliminated in the round of 16

The blue defeated in 5 sets by the German Zverev

Jannik Sinner eliminated in the round of 16 of the men’s singles draw at the US Open 2023. The 22-year-old blue, seeded number 6, today 5 September was defeated by the 26-year-old German Alex Zverev, number 12 on the draw, who won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in 4 hours and 40′.

Sinner gives up after a very tough match, also conditioned by high humidity. The number 1 of Italy pays for the fluctuating return of the serve (53% of prime) and a high number of gratuitous errors: a good 67, compared to the 46 of the opponent. The 50 winning shots, in the end, are not enough. Zverev, who plays one of the best matches of the season, will face the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, number 1 in the world, in the quarterfinals, promoted after the clear victory in 3 sets against Matteo Arnaldi.

THE MATCH

Zverev takes the first set with the decisive break in the ninth game (5-4) and closes the fraction in the tenth game without conceding a point to the blue.

Sinner has the merit of responding immediately with a flying start in the second half: ahead 3-0 before the recovery of the German (2-3), who, however, gives up his serve again and loses the chance to catch up with his rival. Sinner closes 6-2 and evens the score.

In a match with no holds barred, on 2-2 in the third set Zverev changes gears: Sinner, who does not physically appear at the top and also has to deal with a cramp in his left thigh, gives up 4 games in a row (2-6) and has to chase again.

The fourth set begins with an endless game (20 points) in which the South Tyrolean does not materialize two break points: the exchanges are very violent and the intensity of the game, after almost 3 hours of battle, does not decrease. Sinner finds solidity in his service, does not allow break points and puts his arrow at 4-4. Zverev commits a very heavy double fault (4-5) which allows the Italian to close the set for 6-4: it goes to the fifth set.

The German starts fired. He keeps his serve, places the break and cancels the chance that Sinner builds to immediately reduce the gap: Zverev ahead 3-0 with a decisive blaze and closes 6-3 at the first match point.
