Vaccines, Barretta (Fimp): “Prevention is the cornerstone of the profession for paediatricians”

“Prevention is the fulcrum of our being pediatricians and the pediatrician must explain to parents the timing of vaccinations from the first moment. We pediatricians must be architects and protagonists in the implementation of the national vaccination prevention plan and the new national vaccination calendar” . Thus Martino Barretta, head coordinator of the ‘Vaccines and vaccinations’ working group of the Fimp, on the occasion of the symposium ‘Innovation in family paediatrics: the ‘meningioca’ project, organized as part of the national congress of the Italian Federation of pediatricians, currently underway in Giardini Naxos (Me).

“Unfortunately, confidence in vaccines currently stands at only 73% – continued Barretta – which is why at every meeting with parents, which we call ‘health assessments’, we must promote vaccination, because the relationship is the antidote to misinformation to be able to influence parents who hesitate. It is important to promote the value of vaccination, which prevents death and serious complications. Of course, there is an initial risk, which however decreases in the following weeks. We paediatricians must inform about the effectiveness of vaccination, explaining that children must be vaccinated as soon as possible, before the maximum incidence of the disease,” he added.

Barretta then focuses on the adolescent age group and vaccination coverage. “As regards adolescents, given the low vaccination coverage, the time of the meeting for the health assessment is fundamental but it is necessary to involve the entire category of paediatricians to facilitate access to vaccination, to complete the cycles or carry out boosters ”, he concluded.
