Vatican, Becciu defense: “From Perlasca reticence and numerous amnesia”

The words of the lawyers Fabio Viglione and Maria Concetta Marzo

“After two years of waiting, we were finally able to submit Monsignor Perlasca’s statements to verification before the Tribunal. We obtained confirmation that nothing of what the Monsignor has declared so far, amid extensive reticence and numerous amnesias, meets the hypotheses of accuse”. This was underlined by Fabio Viglione and Maria Concetta Marzo, defenders of Cardinal Angelo Becciu accused in the trial for the financial scandal linked to the sale of the London building on Sloane Avenue.

“Moreover, it emerged – the lawyers underline when speaking of Perlasca – that he accused the cardinal only after learning, from people whose identity he surprisingly claimed today that he did not remember, that his eminence had made statements to the investigators against him. This fact is clearly false: the cardinal had never testified against Perlasca”.

“It also emerged – note Viglione and Marzo – that the indictment statement provided to the investigators by Msgr. Perlasca was, in reality, also based on issues that were indicated to him by other people. Despite a suspension of the hearing granted by the Court to allow for the effort to remember, Perlasca was unable to provide the requested identity. He will therefore have to return to the courtroom to clarify and complete his statements on November 30”. “Finally, through some messages from the witness, it was possible to further clarify the existence of an authorization from the Holy Father for the completion of the humanitarian operation even after Cardinal Becciu’s resignation from the office of Substitute, thus confirming the full regularity of His Eminence’s behaviour. After two years of waiting – observes Becciu’s defense – we were finally able to submit Monsignor Perlasca’s statements to verification before the Tribunal”.
