In the second episode of the documentary series, Victoria and David discuss what happened in the late 1990s after David was sent off during a match with Argentina. He was broken. He was really depressed, absolutely clinically depressed. It hurt me so much, I still want to kill these people,” Victoria said.
While David added: “I wish there was a pill you could take that could erase certain memories. I made a stupid mistake. It changed my life. We were in America, about to have our first baby, and I thought ‘ we’ll be fine, in a day or two people will have forgotten about it.” I don’t think I ever talked about it, just because I couldn’t. I find it hard to talk about what I went through because it was so extreme. Everywhere I went, I was abused every single day “Walking down the street and seeing people looking at you a certain way, spitting at you, calling you names, getting in your face and saying some of the things they said, it’s hard. I wasn’t eating, I wasn’t sleeping. I was a mess. I didn’t know what to do.” , said the former player.
“The manager Alex Ferguson called me. He said ‘David, how are you?’ I think I got pretty emotional. He said, ‘How are you, son?’ I said, ‘It’s not that great.’ He said, ‘Okay, don’t worry, son.’ once on the pitch I felt safe. It attracted a lot of attention that I would never wish on anyone, least of all my parents, and I can’t forgive myself for that. In the episode, Victoria talked about how difficult it was to re-examine those memories and said: “Now I understand why I found it so stressful doing these interviews with Netflix, because I blocked out so much of it, and I think David did too, but now it comes back to me: Imagine having a baby and getting death threats? David had to play with everything that was going on.” The couple had their first child Brooklyn in March 1999 and are also parents to Romeo, Cruz and Harper.
