From Friday 14 to Sunday 16 October the boats, divided into groups of homogeneity, will compete at sea in three regattas, one a day, including the coastal one on Sunday up to the Forte dei Marmi jetty, visible from the beaches of Versilia. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday afternoon. The XVII Viareggio Historic Sails Meeting is an event sponsored by Aive (Italian Association of Vintage Sails), Fiv (Italian Sailing Federation) and Cim (International Mediterranean Committee).

The docks of the Versilia Nautical Club in Viareggio will present themselves as a floating open-air museum, where it will be possible to discover the history and characteristics of dozens of wooden hulls built from the early decades of the twentieth century to the present day. The symbolic boat of the 2022 Rally will be Voscià owned by Aive president Giancarlo Lodigiani, a 12.15 meters long Bermudan yawl with movable keel, launched in 1959 by the Ligurian shipyard Sangermani on a project by the New York studio Sparkman & Stephens and formerly belonged to the hero of the Military Navy Luigi Durand de la Penne.

The Navy will participate with some of the boats used for the training of officers, including the stupendous Polar Star of 1965, Chaplin of 1974, available during the summer in Sardinia for the President of the Republic, Artica II of 1956 and Grifone del 1963, the 5.50 International Tonnage Meters winner in 1965 of the World Championship with Admiral Agostino Straulino on board. In Viareggio the boats of this historic class, born in 1949, will compete on a race course dedicated to them.

Numerous hulls will celebrate half a century from the launch: the 11-meter Airone, a design by the Trieste master of classical design Carlo Sciarrelli, the 12-meter Jo Ir II, built by the Pesaro shipyard Gioacchini, the Sangermani Mä Vista and Magia II, the Brigand 9.50 Marie Anne and Nonnopio, then Sula and finally Rainbow, the 1972 C&C already winner of the 1979 Bermuda Race, twin of the Helisara IV of the conductor Herbert Von Karajan, with a dozen Atlantic crossings behind him and an illustrious ex first owner, the American cartoonist Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man, who commissioned the boat when it was launched under the name of Robon.

It will be possible to apply to follow the regattas from the sea on board the Pandora schooner of the “Vela Traditional” association and on the motorsailer of the “Club Underwater Artiglio” of Viareggio. During the days of the event, the Versilia Nautical Club headquarters will host an exhibition of watercolors of historic boats by the Genoese painter Emanuela Tenti, who has always authored the official poster, the images of vintage sails by the photographer Marco Trainotti and an exhibition on the 40 years of Midva boat by cartoonist Davide Besana.
