West Nile, in Italy 301 cases and 15 deaths

Cases of infection are increasing, 160 have developed a neuro-invasive form

Human cases of West Nile infection are still on the rise in the past week. According to the report of the Higher Institute of Health, since the beginning of June in Italy there have been 301 cases, compared to 230 in the previous bulletin, and 15 deaths.

160 cases manifested themselves in the neuro-invasive form, also increasing compared to the 27 in the previous bulletin: 19 in Piedmont, 8 in Lombardy, 85 in Veneto, 7 in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 37 in Emilia-Romagna , 3 in Tuscany, 1 in Sardinia. There are also 45 cases identified in blood donors (5 Piedmont, 6 Lombardy, 23 Veneto, 11 Emilia-Romagna), 93 cases of fever (1 Piedmont, 3 Lombardy, 84 Veneto, 3 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 2 Emilia-Romagna ) and 3 symptomatic cases (all in Veneto).

The first human case of the season was reported by Veneto in June in the province of Padua. Among the confirmed cases, 15 deaths were reported (9 in Veneto, 3 in Piedmont, 1 in Lombardy and 2 in Emilia-Romagna). There are 3 cases of Usutu virus reported in blood donors (2 Friuli-Venezia Giulia, 1 Piedmont).
