The plot of the 1961 musical

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is the tale of a love story. The protagonists are Tony and Maria, two young people from New York’s Upper West Side who fall in love despite being part of two rival gangs. Tony in fact belongs to the Jets, while on the other side there are the Sharks, to which Maria belongs. The gangs divide the territory and there is no possibility that these groups can accept the love relationship between the two. Despite the clear difficulties in reconciling their love, the protagonists dream of a better future together.

Their love story, however, falls when Tony kills Bernardo, Maria’s brother, in a fight. The Sharks swear revenge and decide to kill Tony. The two lovers have no choice but to escape before it’s too late.
