WHO on 4 syrups: “Maybe 66 children in Gambia linked with death”

Director General Tedros: “They may have been distributed elsewhere too, countries check and remove them”

“The World Health Organization issued today an alert for four contaminated medicines identified in The Gambiawhich have been potentially linked to acute kidney injuries and to 66 deaths among children. The four drugs are cough and cold syrups made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited, India. WHO is conducting further investigations with the company and regulatory authorities in India. “This was announced during the press briefing by WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who was impressed by the” loss of these young lives ” that breaks the hearts of their families.

The DG warns: “Although contaminated products have so far only been detected in Gambia, they may have been distributed in other countries. WHO therefore recommends that all countries detect and remove these products from circulation to prevent further harm to patients. “
