World Cup 2022 Qatar, opening ceremony: the Al Bayt stadium is also Italian

Cimolai of Pordenone took care of the upper steps, the steel structure of the roof and the roof membranes.

The opening ceremony of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the first Qatar-Ecuador match, are hosted by the Al Bayt stadium, in Al Khor, in northeastern Qatar. Sixty thousand seats, it is also partly an Italian stadium. In the sense that in the joint venture of companies that built it there is also an Italian company, la Cimolai of Pordenone.

Cimolai, according to the company’s website, is the subcontractor for the supply and assembly of the upper bleachers, the steel structure of the roof and the roof membranes. The overall steel structure is approximately 320m long, 280m wide and 73m high. The roof structure consists of 72 main cantilevered radial trusses which are stabilized by secondary tangential steel structures.

The Italian construction company has a long history of stadium construction. We remember the Olympic Stadium in Athens for the 2004 Olympics, the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland, for the 2012 European Championships.
